Applications and use

This Direct Thermal product is designed for use in dry weigh scale, process tracking, point of sale item information labelling where limited image durability is required. Typical end applications include fruit and vegetable weigh scale, hardware, work-in-process material tracking. Contact with moisture, oil, fats, plasticisers and exposure to strong lighting should be avoided due to potential image fade.

This product is produced without the use of Bisphenol A (BPA). S9500 is ideal be used for all kinds of applications, but is specifically suited for those kinds of applications where the complete packaging should be biodegradable and where indirect or direct food contact with dry foodstuff is required (ie. fruits & vegetables labelling).

The liner is made from FSC® certified paper (FSC Mix Credit, chain-of-custody number: CU-COC-807907, Licence Code: C004451).

Conversion & printing

This product is designed to be converted and dispensed at high speed by all conventional roll conversion technologies, including flexographic and UV letterpress. Due to the thermographic properties, exposure above 50°C may cause premature imaging or discolouration. Inks containing alcohol or volatile organic solvents may also cause discolouration. It is advisable to test inks and varnishes before conversion. We generally recommend not to pre-print the area which will be thermally imaged.

S9500 is compliant with the European food regulation 1935/2004/EC for direct food contact with dry, non-fatty foodstuff.

S9500 complies with DIN EN 13432 biodegradability and compostability regulation and is OK compost certified under the tracking number S259.

Adhesive Performance

The adhesive is characterised by a good initial tack and good adhesion on a wide variety of substrates.

Applications and use

It can be used for all kinds of applications, but is specifically suited for applications where the complete packaging should be biodegradable and where direct food contact is required. The NatureFlex film has a good resistance to oils and grease. Because of its nature (cellulose based), care should taken in wet conditions for long terms applications. Preliminary tests are therefore recommended prior to use.

It is also recommended to store in its original wrapping away from any source of local heating or direct sunlight.

For direct and indirect adhesive coating applications. Particularly suitable as a release paper for die-cutting self
adhesive labels.

Conversion & printing

The product offers very good die-cutting properties. NatureFlex™ can be converted by flexographic and rotogravure printing processes. Nitrocellulose-based inks and water based inks are suitable. For applications on biodegradable packaging, the use of biodegradable inks is recommended. Please consult your printing ink supplier about suitable printing inks.

Because of the heat sensitivity of the face stock, the drying temperature needs to be reduced to the lowest possible temperature. Opposed to this, the air flow to dry the inks needs to be increased. This backing will give high release values and is recommended for manual dispensing.

PLA clear is certified as compostable according to the European Standard EN13432. PLA can be used for all kind of applications, e.g. food (salads, cheese, yoghurt pots) and soft drinks, but especially for these type of applications where the complete packaging should be biodegradable. For these applications, the use of biodegradable inks is recommended. Due to high stiffness of the film care should be taken with use of non-uniform surfaces and where a very high level of squeezability is desired. PLA clear film also has a low water vapour barrier. Because of its nature care should taken in wet conditions for long terms applications, preliminary tests are therefore recommended prior to use.
